(WXYZ) — Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is once again calling on President Donald Trump and the federal government to make masks mandatory across the country.

Speaking Wednesday, Whitmer said she spoke with Dr. Deborah Birx, who is the Coronavirus Response Coordinator for the White House Coronavirus Task Force, while Birx visited Michigan on Wednesday.

According to Whitmer, Birx was very impressed by what Michigan has done as a state, and that people have taken the virus seriously.

Whitmer added that we need "clear and consistent guidance" from the federal government, which includes issuing a federal mask mandate. It's not the first time Whitmer has called on the president to make masks mandatory.

Democratic Presidential Candidate Joe Biden has called for a national mask mandate for a few months.

"Every single American should be wearing a mask when they're outside for the next three months, at a minimum. Every governor should mandate mandatory mask-wearing," Biden said last month.
