(WXYZ) — Governor Gretchen Whitmer said it's "very possible" high school winter sports could resume in the next coming "weeks or days" in Michigan.

In an interview with 7 Action News, Whitmer said the state's COVID-19 case numbers must support taking the step.

"I'd love to get this part of life re-engaged, but getting kids back in the classroom, that's paramount," she said.

Currently, winter sports are set to resume on Feb. 21. A statewide campaign has been urging the governor not to sideline winter sports until then.

Oxford Athletic Director Jordan Ackerman previously told 7 Action News that Feb. 21 is too close to the start of spring sports and many athletes like to play both.

Ackerman said schools are following safety protocols and the proof is when testing was done.

“We tested 30,000 student-athletes in the fall leading up to the finals. And the tests for negativity was 98.8%,” Ackerman said.

Those campaigning to resume high school winter sports plan to hold a rally this Saturday at the state capitol in lansing.
