FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. (WXYZ) — Two people are dead and two others are seriously injured following a multi-car crash involving four vehicles and a semi on westbound I-696 Thursday morning.
The crash closed I-696 at Orchard Lake for several hours. Around 6 p.m., the Michigan Department of Transportation said the freeway was cleared and reopened.
According to Michigan State Police, the two people who died were a 72-year-old man and his 69-year-old wife from Hawks, Mich.
MSP said that the 57-year-old driver of the semi-truck could not stop for traffic and rear-ended the Buick LaCrosse, driven by the 72-year-old man.
That crash resulted in a chain reaction, striking three other vehicles.
Police, medical personnel and firefighters were on scene assisting victims and transporting them to hospitals. It's not clear the others who were injured.
