ALGONAC TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WXYZ) — Fire crews battled a large blaze at a senior and assisted living facility in Algonac for several hours Thursday afternoon.
Authorities said they were notified of a fire happening at around 11:50 a.m. at Rolling Brook Senior Living facility near Fruit and State streets.
The building, which houses dozens of people in apartment-style units, was destroyed, first responders said. The fire involved one structure on a campus of several buildings.
About 40 to 50 people were evacuated. Any belongings people could not take with them were lost in the fire.
No tenants or staff were injured. Some first responders suffered minor smoke inhalation, cuts and bruises, and at least one is being treated at the hospital.
Tenants were moved to Algonac Lions Club until long-term housing is available.
The St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office credited the quick response within a couple minutes from emergency responders to saving lives.
Several agencies assisted at the scene. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, but authorities said at this time, there is no reason to believe it was set intentionally.
Investigators are continuing to go through evidence to gather more information.
