Democrat Jocelyn Benson will be Michigan’s next secretary of state after beating out Mary Treder Lang during Tuesday’s election.

Benson, who has previously run for SOS in 2010, was beaten out by current Secretary of State Ruth Johnson.

Benson has now become the state's first Democratic secretary in 24 years. She won nearly 53 percent of the vote to replace former Secretary of State Ruth Johnson.

The 41-year-old has run on a 30-minute guarantee at Secretary of State office and is the former dean of the Wayne State University Law School. She is now the CEO of the Ross initiative in Sports for Equality.
