Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris speaks at annual Detroit Branch NAACP dinner

DETROIT (WXYZ) — Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris will be the main speaker at the 64th Annual NAACP Fight for Freedom Fund Dinner on Sunday, May 5 at Cobo Hall.

The dinner and networking event, which begins at 5 p.m., will host leaders in business, community, faith-based organizations, labor, grassroots and professionals from around the nation.

Native Detroiter and former president of the Detroit Branch NAACP, Rev. Dr. Charles G. Adams, will be honored at the event. He will receive the James Weldon Johnson Lifetime Achievement Award.

Singer, songwriter, producer and philanthropist Akon will also be honored with the W.E.B. Du Bois Freedom & Justice Award. Aliauna Damala Badara "Akon" Thiam has sold over 35 million albums worldwide and been nominated for five Grammy awards. As a humanitarian, Akon has worked to build lighting over 15 African nations through his Lighting Africa project, which he is also spreading to the United States.
