Detroit janitors to make announcement on whether they will go on strike

Posted

The Service Employees International Union Local 1 janitors are expected to make a major announcement Tuesday regarding the expiration of their contract and details about a potential strike.

Hundreds of janitors are demanding a pay increase to $15 an hour. Currently, they make $9.45 and the union representing them says it is not enough for them to take care of their families.

If the janitors do decide to go on strike, places like the Renaissance Center, Cobo Center, Detroit Metro Airport and 500 Detroit schools, among other buildings, would be impacted.

The union says janitors rely on public assistance to make ends meet and it's time they get paid what's fair.
