DETROIT (WXYZ) — Detroit police are investigating after two people were killed in a shooting on the city's lower east side on Thursday.
Detroit Police Chief James White says four people were traveling in a burgundy Ford when a black SUV pulled up next to the vehicle. Someone inside that vehicle then reportedly opened fire on the Ford near the intersection of Larned and Orleans. The incident happened around 1:40 p.m.
Police say two of the occupants were killed in the shooting and another is listed in critical condition. The other occupant was not shot, police say. All of the victims were men in their 20s, according to police.
Chief White called the incident a "very tragic situation."
He added, "we're looking for any help we can get from the community."
Police say they are looking for what they believe is a black Jeep Cherokee from the late 2000s.
He said Detroit police investigators are digging into the case.
The impact of this incident is being felt by residents, the public and local officials, including the president of the Detroit City Council, Mary Sheffield, who represents District 5, the area where the shooting occurred.
“The news of the shooting at Lafayette Park is heartbreaking, tragic, and disturbing. The persistent issue of gun violence that is permeating our city is robbing families of their loved ones and creating fear within our own community. Detroit’s deserve to enjoy every inch of this city without fear of violence,” said Mary Sheffield, President, Detroit City Council.
“I trust that the Detroit Police Department will act quickly and investigate this matter thoroughly and expeditiously. My heart goes out to the victims and their families as we all wait for more information as this matter is still developing,” Sheffield added.
