DETROIT (WXYZ) — Following night 11 of protests in Detroit, a group has a list of 23 demands that they presented to Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan Tuesday morning.

Tristan Taylor is the designated spokesman for the protesters and he tells 7 Action News the meeting with the mayor is a first step. And this won’t be a long series of discussions.

“We’re definitely not interested in having useless discussions,” Taylor said.

Mayor Duggan says he will give the protesters respect and listen to their concerns, but said in a response to my question during his news conference, “there are a lot of other stakeholders in the City of Detroit and we’re going to make sure everybody’s included in the conversation.”

Mayor Duggan lifted the 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew on Monday, after five nights of no arrests and peaceful protests. Taylor says Chief James Craig had no choice but to “eat the curfew” because last Tuesday night they arrested peaceful protesters only because they violated the curfew.

Chief Craig says that was always their goal and the last five nights of no trouble is a win.

The list of 23 demands include:

  • Defund DPD
  • De-militarize DPD
  • Expungement of all crimes beyond 15 years
  • End Project Greenlight
  • DPD no longer involved in evictions
  • All police out of schools
  • End pre-trial detention
  • Release all pre-trial detainees
  • Release all non-violent offenders
  • End cash bail
  • Release all protesters being held
  • Drop all charges against all protesters
  • No cooperation with ICE making Detroit a Sanctuary City
  • No use of rubber bullets
  • Decriminalization of recreational drugs
  • Return residency requirements for DPD
  • Substantial investment for mental health and substance abuse victims
  • More punitive charges against officers who hide behind their badge
  • Duty to intervene for other officers
  • Abolish foreclosures
  • End police union funding of DA office
  • More accessible structure for police accountability
  • Care for juveniles instead of jailing
