DETROIT (WXYZ) — The City of Detroit lost the most people in the past nine years than any city in America, according to new information from the U.S. Census Bureau.
The bureau on Thursday released a report about the cities that experienced the most population growth and lost the most population from 2010-2019.
According to the bureau, Detroit ranks No. 1 in the 15 cities that had the largest population decrease between April 1, 2010 and July 1, 2019 with populations of 50,000 more.
Detroit lost 43,867 in the nine years, bringing the total population in 2019 to 670,031. That's an 6.1% drop.
Cities in the southern and western regions of the U.S. experienced rapid growth, according to the Census Bureau. The ssouth had 10 of the top 15 fastest-growing cities.
Phoenix came in at the top of the total population growth, adding nearly 235,000 people in nine years. That's followed by Houston, San Antonio, Los Angeles and Austin.
In 1990, Detroit had more than 1 million residents and that number has continued to decline. By 2000, that number was at 945,471 and then a steep drop-off from 2009 to 2010, going from 821,019 to 711,120.
