(WXYZ) — Students at Burns Elementary School in Detroit were able to take home three new books apiece, thanks to contributions from WXYZ/WMYD employees and generous viewers.

Burns Elementary has more than 380 students who were able to pick out their three favorite books.

Principal Cynthia Clayton said she was excited to see the students have the opportunity.

This effort has been part of a Channel 7 ongoing commitment to help provide books to children right in or community.

This campaign raised over $65,000, which helped stock libraries at head-start programs all over metro Detroit. We've held several book fairs similar to this one... and ultimately giving thousands and thousands of students the opportunity to take home books.

Along with our employees along and a matching donation from the Scripps Howard Foundation, our viewers, one of our sponsors, Trion Solutions, stepped up big time with a matching donation, all going right to the program.
