DETROIT (WXYZ) — Detroit police say an Amazon delivery driver was carjacked at gunpoint Wednesday morning on the city's east side.
The incident happened around 11 a.m. in the area of Nottingham Street near I-94. The Amazon driver was delivering packages when the van was stolen.
Police say they are looking for three suspects.
According to investigators, a suspect driving a dark blue Chevrolet Trailblazer approached the delivery van, and a passenger from the suspect vehicle entered the van.
After entering the van, the suspect pointed a firearm at the Amazon driver, who attempted to re-enter the delivery van.
Suspects in both the Chevy Trailblazer and Amazon delivery van fled to the area. Packages spilled into the street as the delivery driver was left behind.
Police say the suspects were captured on camera moments later about half a mile away in the area of Alter Road and Outer Drive, a more discrete location near to an abandoned lot. At that location, they moved the packages into the suspect vehicle.
The suspects then took off in the Trailblazer and have not been found as of Wednesday night. Police recovered the Amazon van and more than 20 packages.
“He said that somebody came and just hopped in his van as soon he got out,” neighbor Arielle Johnson said.
Johnson was waiting for her packages from Amazon when the carjacking happened right in front of her house.
“They weren't even at our door yet. They were still just on the grass,” Johnson said. “It's really sad, honestly. A lot of crime happens in this area. It’s just unfortunate that none of us could capture it on our Ring cameras.”
Another neighbor said illegal dumping is an issue in the area. Police had set up cameras on each end of the street.
"We're going to get you. You’ll be in custody pretty soon,” Detroit Police Department Cmdr. Brian Harris said.
7 Action News reached out to Amazon for a statement and they said they are investigating the incident.
“Things are getting worse and worse. We're in the last of the last days. Every time you turn around, something worse is happening,” neighbor Delores Sheperd said.
