ROMULUS, Mich. (WXYZ) — Six airports in Michigan will get nearly $40 million in federal infrastructure grants for work, U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao announced on Monday morning.
The grants are part of the FAA's Airport Improvement Program, and total $986 million this time around. There has been more than $3 billion in grants given out nationwide so far.
"This significant investment in airport improvements in Michigan will fund construction and rehabilitation projects that will help maintain high levels of safety in U.S. aviation," Chao said in a release.
Detroit Metropolitan Airport will get the largest grant, $12.38 million or taxiway reconstruction. The Detroit Willow Run Airport will get $403,157 to acquire new snow removal equipment.
On top of that, Delta County Airport in Escanaba will get $862,272 for taxiway rehab, lighting, a new generator and a new rescue & firefighting vehicle; Sawyer International Airport in Gwinn will get $1.1 million for building expansion; Muskegon County Airport will get $300,000 for an emergency generator and an airport study; Pellston Regional Airport in Emmet County will get $43,980 to remove non-hazardous obstructions.
Plus, there will be $24.54 million to the MIchigan State Block Grant for development projects at other non-primary airports in the state.
