(WXYZ) — It may be hard to get some voters motivated to go to the polls on Election Day. Because of the pandemic, there are few events meant to get people pumped to vote.
One organization is packing boxes full of goodies and useful information to get voters excited about the election.
“If you want a change, you have to vote,” said Madison Thomas, the local project manager for the Party At Your Mailbox effort.
The national non-partisan group Black Girls Vote came up with the idea because of the pandemic.
Party at the Mailbox takes place in Detroit, Philadelphia and Baltimore. Locally, the organization is set to deliver 2,000 boxes filled Detroit-centric items like a Pistons baseball cap, Detroit vs Everybody shirt, a can of Faygo — Sanders chocolate and Better Made Chips, just to name a few things.
But dig deeper and you will find crucial information on how to register to vote, where to vote and who to call if you’re having trouble voting on Election Day.
The effort has been fueled by donations and sponsors. They’ve already started passing out the boxes in Detroit and some neighboring cities.
“People have been jumping up and down waiting for boxes," Thomas said. "One lady actually said her neighbor had gotten their box before her and she was waiting and waiting. Then she finally got her box and she was very excited.”
Thomas says it’s better to party at your mailbox than stand on a "soap box."
“If you don’t vote and you complain, you can’t complain, you didn’t vote,” she said.
The organization is gathering research to see if the box inspires voters to head to the polls. They already have plans to do this for the next Election Day.
“Voting matters, your voice matters,” Thomas said.
