More than 200 Ford employees started working in its new Corktown office space on Thursday.
They're all part of Ford's self-driving and electric vehicles team. The company released video of what the 45,000 square foot space looks like. It's a refurbished factory that sits right along Michigan Avenue near Rosa Parks Blvd.
"Having the team walk around after work, experience the environment... really makes them think about the environment where they will launch in," said Sherif Marakby, VP of Ford's Autonomous and Electric Vehicles.
Auto analyst John McElroy says with the focus these days being on new technology, being in Detroit is a good move.
"You want Silicon Valley speed... so to create a totally separate group outside of Dearborn in its own little campus... can make magic happen."
Some believe Ford could be making more moves. There are reports that Ford is in talks to buy the
iconic Michigan Central Train Station.
"Clearly ford is very interested in getting it," McElroy said. "They're not saying anything... that already tells you they're very interested. If the deal was off, they'd say so. The fact they're not saying anything I take as a good sign."
Action News tried to get a comment on behalf of the train station's owner, but weren't able to reach anyone.
When we asked Ford about the reports, a spokesperson simply referred to the Corktown move and said, "We're really excited about what's happening in Corktown. We have nothing new to announce."
