A gas main break that was reported on Wayne State University's campus in Detroit has been capped. Repair work continues on the main

The incident closed the entire campus and classes were canceled.

A construction crew working on the roadway at Second and Warren hit an underground gas main. The odor and sound of escaping natural gas was strong in the area of Gullen Mall on the campus, officials say.

Students, staff and faculty were urged to avoid the area. Warren Avenue is closed between Cass Avenue and Anthony Wayne Drive.

All housing buildings on campus were evacuated. The evacuation location for campus residents was Matthaei Physical Education Center. University Towers will remain open.

The evacuation has now been lifted and campus has been reopened.
