Several metro Detroit road construction projects at a dead stop, no resolution expected soon

Several metro Detroit road construction projects have been shut down because of an ongoing dispute between union machine operators and the construction companies they work for.  

This is actually a deep dispute between MITA, the Michigan Infrastructure and Transportation Association, a group of construction companies that do 80 to 85% of the road projects in Michigan, and the Operating Engineers Local 324 union.

I was told the companies gave a Power of Attorney to the Association to negotiate one contract for all companies doing road construction. The previous contract expired on June 1.  

The crews have been working without a contract but generally under the terms of the old contract. This work stoppage on road construction projects is indefinite because no new talks are scheduled and because unfair labor practice charges are going to be filed.

We requested lists from the state and Wayne County, but they have not responded. 

Oakland County

Projects that are shut down

  • Pine Tree resurfacing in Orion Twp.
  • Dequindre widening reconstruction, Long Lake to Burning Bush in Troy/Sterling Heights
  • Opdyke bridge replacement over Clinton River in Auburn Hills
  • Adams Rd. resurfacing, Square Lake to South Blvd. in Bloomfield Twp. and Troy
  • Tripp Road reconstruct, Dixie Highway to Van in Groveland Twp.
  • Baldwin widening/reconstruct, Gregory to Waldon in Orion Twp.
  • Walton Blvd. culvert replacements and resurfacing, Adams to Squirrel in Rochester Hills and Auburn Hills

Projects that are ongoing but could be shut down

  • South Blvd., Adams to Crooks resurfacing in Rochester Hills/Troy
  • Wixom Road bridge replacement over Huron River in Commerce Township
  • Secord Lake Road bridge preventative maintenance in Addison Township

  • Grand River intersection with South Hills,  intersection widening in Lyon Township
  • Orion/Flint/Miller intersection roundabout construction in Orion Twp.

Macomb County

Projects that are shut down

  • Projects which were started but are now suspended:
  • Mound Road from 14 Mile to 18 Mile RRR resurfacing
  • Van Dyke from 18 Mile to Clinton River bridge RRR resurfacing
  • 2018 concrete PPP various locations countywide

Projects that have not been started

  • 2018 HMA PPP countywide, including resurfacing on Mound south of 14 Mile
  • Metro Parkway/ Garfield Road RRR resurfacing
  • Utica Road from Dodge Park to Schoenherr HMA resurfacing with passing lanes at selected locations
  • Clinton Twp SAD subdivision reconstruction projects

Projects which will be bid by Sept. 7 and may be impacted

  • 23 Mile from North Avenue to Fairchild road reconstruction and widening
  • Macomb Orchard Trail from East Pond Creek to Powell Road rehabilitation
