(WXYZ) — It's been several months since construction on the Restore the Reuther project along I-696 in Macomb County began. While it was expected to open soon, MDOT said unpredictable winter weather is keeping them from announcing an exact open date right now.

According to MDOT, information on the department's MiDrive shows the lane closures extending into early January, but they say every effort is being focuses on reopening both the eastbound and westbound lanes as soon as possible. Until then, the eastbound lanes will remain closed and the westbound lanes will remain open.

"While all the necessary protective measures cotninue to be employed, we are experiencing prolonged concrete cure times in these colder temperatures," MDOT said in a release.

While they're waiting, they continue to place travel lanes, ramps, valley gutter and shoulders as they prepare.

They also said should completion and other miscellaneous work may continue under intermittent lane closures once traffic is restored to normal.
