ST. CLAIR SHORES (WXYZ) — A city-run golf course is under fire after a suburban family’s close call with a golf ball. Golfers in St. Clair Shores say they can’t understand how someone could miss a shot so far that it would strike a passing vehicle near the St. Clair Shores Golf Club.

“We heard a sound like a bomb going off and the window shattered," says mother Serena Clarke. "I had my kids inside, and they were in a panic screaming to pull over.”

Clarke posted images of her broken window to Facebook, and hundreds have commented so far.

The incident took place last week, as she was driving along Masonic just feet away from the fence at the course.

“There’s a school across the street and kids were also playing outside," Clarke said. "Any of them could have been hit as well."

In response, city manager Mike Smith who oversees the course, is pledging to put up netting along the fence, and plant shrubbery to stop golf balls from traveling onto the road.

“This is very rare, but certainly we want to cut down on any chance of this happening again,” Smith said.

For the family that experienced it, there is a desire to move past the incident despite the fact there were no apologies.

“I’m fortunate that I can afford to make those repairs, but more importantly, I want to make sure this doesn’t happen to someone else," Clarke said.
