Michigan has officially banned marijuana-infused alcoholic drinks.

Governor Rick Snyder signed the legislation on Tuesday.

Supporters say the bill is a preemptive move in case Michigan voters legalize marijuana for recreational use next month.

Opponents say the legislation is a solution to a nonexistent problem because there is no commercial market for marijuana-infused beverages.

The new law does not apply to hospitals, universities, colleges and pharmaceutical companies doing research.
