GROSSE ILE, mich. (WXYZ) — Officials announced Wednesday that the Grosse Ile Parkway Bridge, which is over the Trenton Channel, will be closed "for an indefinite period of time" for emergency repairs.

Motorist will now have to utilize the toll bridge as an alternative route until repairs are completed on the free bridge.

Brian Loftus, Grosse Ile Township supervisor, posted to Facebook about the closure, adding that the emergency closure is for required decking repairs.

Motorists utilize the free bridge between Grosse Ile and the mainland, as it carries 75 of traffic.

In May, 7 Investigator Heather Catallo revealed the Grosse Ile Parkway Bridge received a 3 rating for safety, and was listed in serious condition, according to an inspection report. Wayne County is responsible for maintenance and safety inspections of the bridge with oversight from MDOT and the Federal highway Administration (FHWA). Bridges in the county are rated on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the best.

Repairs on the free Parkway Bridge were slated for fall 2019.

Officials are asking motorists to plan for extra travel time as they take a detour route.
