(WXYZ) — On Jan. 26, 1837, the State of Michigan gained statehood, becoming the nation's 26th state.
Today the great state turns 183.

It was more than a year after the state adopted its first constitution and elected its first governor that The Mitten was recognized as a state, according to the Michigan History Center.
