(WXYZ) — Labor Day weekend has arrived.

While many are looking forward to a relaxing three-day weekend, health officials are concerned that COVID-19 cases will spike soon after.

Chief Health Editor Dr. Partha Nandi says there seems to be a pattern with cases spiking after holidays.

Numbers could surge in the next couple of weeks due to the holiday and schools/colleges starting back up.

Additionally, small gatherings with friends and families are still opportunities for the virus to spread; it just takes one infected person to be there.

Here's advice for gatherings:

1. Stay outside, don’t gather indoors.
2. Set up chairs in groups based on family units that live together. Keep these groups 6 feet away from each other.
3. Wear your mask at all times except for when you eat.
4. Bring your own food; if you must share food, separate it into individual servings. And ask family units to come and get food one at a time.
5. Please don’t share utensils, plates or condiments. Unless you are going to wash or sanitize between uses.
