(WXYZ) — It's the fall and birds across Michigan will begin migrating south. As Michigan State University points out, it's a great chance for you and your kids to watch these birds fly in their V-formation, but it's also a dangerous time for the birds, something that you can help with.
According to Detroit Audubon, which is a group that helps foster the appreciation and conservation of birds and the environment, there are several ways you can help birds during their migration.
One of those ways is to keep your lights off or down from dusk until dawn because many land birds migrate at night, including warblers, vireos, thrushes, orioles and sparrows. Statistics show that nighttime window collisions kill millions of migrating birds every year.
