CLAWSON, Mich. (WXYZ) — What if in addition to home improvement supplies, a hardware store could also provide a home? It's about to become a reality in Clawson!
At just 2.2 square miles Clawson has a motto: "The little city with the big heart."
And lately the big demand!
Noble Fish recently expanded, White Wolf Japanese Patisserie just opened, plans for the new Weiss Distillery and Sabbath Coffee shop have been approved – just to name a few. It seems many developers and businesses want to set up shop.
With limited space this little city is growing up, literally! Plans for Ace Place were just approved to build two stories of apartments above the Ace Hardware store in downtown Clawson.
While some handy shoppers sometimes feel like they live at the hardware store, they never imagined one day, they actual could!
The decades old 20,000-square foot Ace Hardware store will become a 56,000-square foot development. Two additional floors will be built on top of the existing store with 31 high-end apartment units. There will be a mix of studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments that will range from 500 to 1,200 square feet.
There will be gated parking for the residential units with the purchase of the property next door at 213 E. 14 Mile.
Four new retail spaces will be added, and the Ace Hardware Store will get a face-lift and a garden center addition.
The new structure features details like ivy crawling up the exterior walls.
"Just having the green space and terraces for our apartments, it’s just going to be a wonderful look for our downtown," says James Albus, the Director of Building and Planning for the City of Clawson.
Construction begins in the spring of 2020 and could take up to two years to build. The Ace Hardware store will be open during construction.
