(WXYZ) — The National Weather Service has issued a gale warning and urgent messages about high winds on both Lake Michigan and Lake Huron for Monday, which could bring 20-foot waves to the Great Lakes.
According to the NWS, gale force winds on Lake Michigan on Monday from southeast to south could be 35-40 knots into the early afternoon, and northwest gales 35-40 knots late Tuesday morning through Tuesday evening. That means waves could be 12-18 feet today subsiding to 6-10 feet on Monday night, before going to 8-12 feet on Tuesday.
For Lake Huron, sustained winds could reach 38 knots, and "the largest expected significant waves will be 16 feet with a potential maximum wave height of 23 feet," the NWS said.
