Detroit expands mounted police patrols

Posted

Detroit police are planning to add more force to their mounted patrol units.

Police Sgt. Douglas Muston tells 7 Action News each well-trained horse is worth 20 officers on foot.

The mounted patrols are largely used for community outreach and crowd control.

Horses were being trained inside the Grosse Pointe Hunt Club to stay out of harsh winter conditions.

Right now, the mounted patrol is made of five horses, they hope to have the sixth horse by the end of the winter.
