STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. (WXYZ) — It was an emotional Christmas night for the family of retired Sterling Heights police sergeant Daryl Brown.

Roughly 200 people came out singing Christmas carols and turning their porch lights blue to show support for the family.

Just 11 days after his 50th birthday, Brown was struck and killed by a suspected drunk driver while crossing in front of the Renaissance Center in downtown Detroit.

The community paused their Christmas plans to try and give a resemblance of light to his family during their darkest time.

"It's amazing," said Sterling Heights Police Captain Colleen Hopper. "Nobody hesitated. Everyone wanted to know what they could do and absolutely everyone came out."
