An infant is hospitalized following a car crash in Detroit where the woman driver attempted to flee the scene, police say.

A 7-month-old girl was ejected from a vehicle at Tireman and Northfield in Detroit on Monday.

The woman, who was driving a Toyota Camry, is described as an acquaintance of the child's father. Police say she drove through a stop sign and crashed into another car.

The child was left underneath the car as the woman attempted to flee the scene. Adrian Ortiz, 21, was the driver of the vehicle that was hit. He stepped in to help rescue the infant from underneath the car.

“We then heard a baby crying from under her car, and together we lifted it and I pulled her out," Ortiz said.

The woman driver was later taken into custody by police and was believed to be heavily intoxicated.

“She was denying that a baby was even there," Ortiz said.

Police say the child was not restrained in a car seat during the crash. The infant was taken to Children's Hospital and is listed in temporary serious condition, but is expected to make a complete recovery.
