(WXYZ) — Kia is planning to issue a nationwide recall after hundreds of its cars spontaneously caught on fire.
The automaker will call for inspections to determine whether high-pressure fuel pumps were installed properly.
The recall involves more than 50,000 Optimas, 17,000 Sorentos and about 1,000 Sportage compact SUVs.
Kia cannot formally issue the recall because of the government shutdown – the plan must first be approved by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
