According to the Livingston County Sheriff's Office, deputies were called to the home on Nicholson Rd. around 7:09 p.m. for a report of shots fired.

Deputies found an armed man who had sustained gunshot wounds, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The homeowner, who called 911, had also been shot. He was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The sheriff's office tells 7 News Detroit, the suspect broke into the home and fired multiple shots at the homeowner, striking him twice, one in his arm and one in his abdomen.

The homeowner returned fire, hitting the suspect, who was identified as the estranged husband of a woman who was visiting the homeowner at the time. Deputies say she was not injured.

Those who live nearby recalled seeing a massive police presence Thursday night.

“I was just sitting in the house and heard a volley of shots, maybe four or five. You know, we’re in a country, [I] didn’t think anything of it," said Ron Hogbin. "Then after 7 p.m., lights and sirens and everything, and I’m like oh geez, it's close, it was right across the street.”

"When I saw out the front door it was about, at one time, up to a dozen police cars, and fire department people," said Hogbin's father Ron, who lives next door.

Deputies say while it is still early in their investigation, they say at this stage, everything points to self defense during an active home invasion.
