ROMULUS, Mich. (WXYZ) — The Detroit man charged in the fatal hit-and-run that killed a retired Sterling Height police sergeant was arraigned Saturday morning.
A 34th District court judge set 30-year-old Jimi Pierowich's bond at 10 percent of $10,000 and ordered him to wear an alcohol tether.
The judge's ruling did not sit well with the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office who charged Pierowich with operating while intoxicated causing death. Police sergeant Daryl Brown passed away over the weekend as a result of his injuries.
A spokesperson from the Prosecutor's office released this statement in response:
“This is is a very sad case. Mr. Brown was a man who dedicated his life to protect the public from harm. The alleged acts of the defendant took retired Sgt. Brown, from his family, friends, and the citizens of Sterling Heights. The defendant received a 10,000/10% bond with an alcohol tether. The Wayne County Prosecutor ‘s office will look at the appropriateness of this bond and address it in court.”
Pierowich is due back in court for a pre-trial hearing in early January.
