(WXYZ) — Eastbound I-696 is back open at Couzens Ave. after a major crash overnight.
The highway closed just before 4 a.m. due to the crash, and reopened several hours later.
According to Michigan State Police, a driver intentionally crashed into the median, which caused the left lane to be clocked. The crash also caused a light pole to fall into the road, which was then hit by a second vehicle.
A third vehicle then struck the initial crash, causing three crashes in total.
No one was seriously injured.
Police say the driver in the first intentional crash fled the scene, but was located and is suspected of driving under the influence.
This crash on EB I-696 at Couzens looks to be a bad one. So heartbreaking. Please avoid the area, I don't think the highway is opening up there anytime soon. Again EB I-696 closed at Couzens. @wxyzdetroit pic.twitter.com/ddLaEe9jHn
