ANN ARBOR, MI (WXYZ) — The man prosecutors believe is responsible for the murder of an Ann Arbor activist faced a judge on Monday for his arraignment.

His original arraignment was scheduled for yesterday, but it was postponed after he refused to cooperate with the courts.

The death of 51-year-old Jude Walton rocked the Ann Arbor community where she was widely known as a voice for the voiceless.

She was found dead inside her home Thursday when officers stopped by for a wellness check.

Ricky Dewayne McCain, who is 54 years old and also from Ann Arbor, was arraigned at 14A District Court on open murder, home invasion first degree, and criminal sexual conduct - assault with intent to commit sexual penetration.

A not guilty plea was entered on his behalf, according to the Ann Arbor Police Department.

It is unknown at this time if the two knew each other or if there was any possible motive.

Jude Watson worked to end homelessness while volunteering at Avalon House. Those who loved her are holding on to the memories.

“She was funny. She was smart. She as witty,” one community member said.

“Her reach was so vast. She was the safest space I’ve ever been on this planet," another added.

“The murder of Jude Walton was a shock to this community and an enormous loss to those who had the pleasure to know her personally. Her community work really is the embodiment of Ann Arbor. I can say I’m proud of my team, both detectives and patrol officers, who worked tirelessly to get charges authorized in less than 48 hours of Ms. Walton’s body being discovered. I know the community still has a lot of questions surrounding her murder, and while we won’t be able to disclose all the details right now, I can say there is no longer a threat to this community," said Ann Arbor Interim Chief of Police Aimee Metzer.
