ROMULUS, Mich. (WXYZ) — Romulus police say a man is in custody after walking around with a pellet gun that appeared to be a real gun near a school on Wednesday morning.

According to police, they received a call around 8 a.m. on the man with a long gun on Riveroak Dr., just down the street from Hale Creek Elementary School.

The incident didn't prompt a lockdown at the school as police had the man in custody within minutes after a short foot chase.

They didn't know the gun was a pellet gun until they got to the scene. The gun has no orange tip as pellet guns do, and it also has a scope.

Police said had the man not run away, it would have been a non-issue because it's legal to walk around with a rifle.
