(WXYZ) — The Macomb Community Action Office of Senior Services is seeking volunteers to assist with the Meals on Wheels program, specifically for the winter months.
The program serves a warm, nutritious meal to more than 1,700 home-bound senior citizens daily. Many dedicated volunteers took a break and headed south for the winter, creating a huge gap and increasing the need for volunteers.
According to Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel, volunteers help give seniors a nutritious meal and also provide a welfare check. The welfare checks are critical during the winter months, when the weather is exceptionally cold and frigid.
All volunteers must be at least 18 years old or be accompanied by a parent or authorized adult. All volunteers must pass a background check.
If planning to help deliver meals, please plan to use your own vehicle and to be on the road for an estimated two hours. Delivery drivers must have a valid driver’s license and proof of current insurance.
Routes are delivered Monday - Friday typically between 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Volunteers are allowed to select their own meal pick-up site and deliver meals within their own community.
To register as a volunteer, fill out the registration form or call 586-469-5228.
