SOUTHGATE, Mich. (WXYZ) — Bed bugs have moved into an apartment in Southgate and residents are asking for help. The infestation is happening at a complex near Ford Road and Quarry, where one woman says bed bugs are taking over the building.

The bed bugs were first noticed over a year ago. After moving into a building, a resident noticed her neighbors having issues, now she says the bedbugs are traveling through the walls, spreading from unit to unit and crawling out of electrical outlets into carpets and furniture.

Dumpsters are filled with furniture and cushions outside the Village Green Apartments. That's one sign of a problem that has gone on too long for Alyssa Stafford, a mother of two.

"We actually seen them come from the outlet," Stafford said. "We tape our outlets but they come from somewhere else."

She wraps her mattress in plastic along with her kids' mattresses and her couch in an attempt to prevent the bed bugs from infesting her place.

"It’s the apartments surrounding ours that have them all the time and it’s really disgusting and annoying," she said.

Stafford says building management does have an exterminator but the bugs keep coming back.

She's asked for months to move into another building and have her security deposit transferred, and so far that hasn't happened.

"I want them to exterminate the entire building and I want to be moved out as soon as possible," she said.
