DETROIT (WXYZ) — Two days ago, Nate Lashley wasn't even sure if he'd be in the field for the Rocket Mortgage Classic, but after the first round, the 36-year-old is leading the tournament after a career-high 63 to post -9 on the day.
Lashley, who according to the Golf Channel, got into the field on Wednesday as the first alternate, never made bogey during his entire round.
"Had some nice saves early in my round, made a lot of putts, hit a lot of fairways," he said. "It was a solid round day."
He also only had 23 putts.
"I got it under the hole on most holes and had a lot of uphill putts with not a lot of break, so I was able to knock those in," Lashley said following his round.
This is the first year he's had his PGA Tour Card, and he's looking to get inside the top 125 in FedExCup points.
Ryan Armour and Nick Watney are tied for second after the first round at -8, followed by Charles Howell III, Talor Gooch, Chez Reavie, Steward Cink, Rory Sabbatini, Adam Schenk, and Dylan Frittelli tied for fourth at -7.
The second round of the tournament begins Friday morning just before 7 a.m.
