Cyntoia Brown, a woman who spent half her life in prison for killing a man she says was sex trafficking her, was released from prison earlier this week. Now, filmmaker Dan Birman has confirmed that Netflix will release a documentary about Brown's life.
According to Birman, the documentary will be called "Me Facing Life: Cyntoia's Story."
Birman released a statement on Wednesday, saying:
"We are pleased to be working with Netflix on a feature documentary about Cyntoia Brown. The new film builds on what we learned over the past 15 years during her fight for freedom and the events leading to her receiving clemency. We expect to complete it by the end of this year, and for it to appear on Netflix during the early part of 2020. We will be happy to talk further about the film as we move closer to its release."
At the age of 16, Brown was sentenced to life for the murder of Johnny Allen. Her attorneys say she was a victim of child sex trafficking when she killed the 43-year-old. Brown claims that she shot himAllen because she saw him reach for a gun.
Earlier this year, former Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam granted Brown, now 31, clemency.
While in prison, Brown worked on the book "Free Cyntoia" that will be released later this fall.
Prior to her release from prison, Brown released a statement saying in part that she plans to use her experiences to help other women and girls suffering from abuse and exploitation.
