ANDREWS, Texas — The Texas Department of Public Safety says nine people were killed in a head-on collision in West Texas, including six students and a coach from a New Mexico university’s golf teams.
DPS identified eight of the nine victims from Tuesday evening's crash as:
- Henrich Siemens, 38, of Seminole, Texas
- Tyler James, 26, of Hobbs, New Mexico
- Maurico Sanchez, 19, of Mexico
- Travis Garcia, 19, of Pleasanton, Texas
- Jackson Zinn, 22, of Westminster, Colorado
- Karissa Raines, 21, of Fort Stockton, Texas
- Laci Stone, 18, of Nocona, Texas
- Tiago Sousa, 18, of Portugal
One victim was not identified by name, but investigators said he was a 13-year-old boy from Seminole, Texas.
Hayden Underhill, 20, and Dayton Price, 19, are currently in a hospital in Lubbock with critical injuries.
Texas DPS Sgt. Steven Blanco says a pickup truck crossed the center line of a highway and crashed into a vehicle carrying members of the University of the Southwest men’s and women’s golf teams. They had been returning from a tournament in Midland, Texas.
Blanco says six students were killed, along with a faculty member. The driver of the pickup and its passenger were also killed.
KWES-TV reports that one of the victims, Tyler James, was a coach of both teams.
The University of the Southwest, an NAIA-affiliated school located in New Mexico, said on Twitter that it was working to notify family members of those involved in the crash.
"The University of the Southwest can confirm that there has been a fatal bus accident involving the USW men's and women's golf teams," the school said in a statement. "The university is currently attempting to notify family members of those involved in the accident. Counseling and religious services will be available to students, faculty, and staff on campus. The university will continue to provide additional information as it becomes available."
