The Humane Society of Huron Valley rescued more than a dozen dogs, birds and ponies, "covered head to to in feces," from a home in Ypsilanti Township on Monday.
According to the HSHV, cruelty investigators arrived at the home after a Good Samaritan reported it to the humane society last week after trying to buy a puppy.
When they arrived, they found 17 Shih Tzu dogs, ages 6 months to 7 years, together with cages full of chickens all living in a bedroom covered urine and feces.
On top of that, there were a pair of lovebirds, a parakeet, a Rouen duck, a pony and a miniature horse were also on the property.
“Big thanks to the person who reported this situation to us. The owner is fully cooperating. We’re relieved he recognized the need for assistance and so glad we’re able to get the animals the help they need,” said Melinda Szabelski, HSHV’s Cruelty & Rescue Supervisor.
Most of the animals were covered in their own feces and matted, suffering from various medical conditions.
The pony is still under medical evaluation while the miniature horse has been given a permanent home at SASHA Farm animal sanctuary.
While the dogs are still under medical care, the humane society is warning potential adopters that they are scared, not housetrained and may have ongoing medical needs.
