Police shoot man who was holding woman hostage

Posted

Northville Township Police Chief John Werth says it appears officers did exactly what they were supposed to do when they shot a man Tuesday evening.

The call to 911 came around 8 p.m. from a pastor trying to help. A man with a gun was holding his girlfriend hostage at a home in the Park Place Apartments.

The man’s mom was at the home off of Silver Spring Street. She said her son had been drinking and taking pills.  He was not mentally well.

Police hoped to talk to him, but when they approached he pointed a gun in their direction, Chief Werth said.

That is when an officer shot the man once. The bullet went through his bicep into his shoulder. He dropped the gun, and was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

“Right now all indications are it was a fine job by all the officers involved,” said Chief Werth.

"It was an individual with a handgun. He wasn’t planning on doing anything nice with it there. Officers responded, and there is a victim who is alive today thanks to the actions of the officers.”

The man’s identity has not yet been released as he has not yet been arraigned.
