(WXYZ) — There are now 41 confirmed measles cases in southeast Michigan, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services announced Monday. It's the highest number of cases in Michigan since 1991.

The two new confirmed cases are in Oakland County and Washtenaw County. This is the first confirmed case in Washtenaw County. It is not yet known where the Washtenaw County patient was exposed.

The outbreak began with a travel-related case in Oakland County confirmed in early March. The case came from an individual who had visited Israel following a stay in New York before returning to metro Detroit.

Of the 41 cases, 39 of them are in Oakland County, one is in Washtenaw Conuty and one is in Wayne County. The infected individuals range in age from 8 months to 63.

In 1991, there were 65 cases of measles reported.

The vaccine for measles, prophylaxis, is effective within 72 hours of exposure. Immune Globulin (Ig) treatment is effective within six days of exposure for high-risk individuals, which include pregnant women and those with weakened immune systems.

If you believe you may have been exposed, health officials advise to watch for symptoms 21 days after exposure. If measles symptoms develop, contact your health care provider.

Measles is a vaccine-preventable disease. It's spread by direct person-to-person contact, and through the air by a contagious person sneezing or coughing. The virus can live for up to two hours in the air after an infected person coughs or sneezes.

Symptoms usually start 7 to 14 days after exposure, but can appear up to 21 days after exposure and may include:

  • High fever (may spike to over 104˚F)
  • Cough
  • Runny nose
  • Red, watery eyes (conjunctivitis)
  • Tiny white spots on the inner cheeks, gums, and roof of the mouth (Koplik Spots) 2-3 days after symptoms begin
  • A rash that is red, raised, blotchy; usually starts on face, spreads to trunk, arms, and legs 3- 5 days after symptoms begin
