Community Comment: The debate over Michigan's new 3-feet bicycle passing law continues

and last updated

Our recent editorial increasing community awareness about Michigan’s new law requiring 3-feet of room when passing bicyclists on the road, sparked a computer load of strong emotions on both sides!

Debbie Brown Donaldson wrote:

“This is soooo stupid! We need to slow down to practically nothing for a NON-motorized vehicle that isnt registered or licensed. Who the (fill in the blank) makes these rules?”

Krystal Norris sent us this comment:

”So, when you don’t have 3-feet, then what?"

This Channel 7 viewer wrote:

“My son at the age of…12, was warned by a city cop, not to ride his bike on sidewalks. Next time he would be issued a ticket! Wow, really?

  • Deborah Chwalek

And this viewer replied:

“(Are) you saying, ‘Use the sidewalk?’  I’m (going to) let you argue with all the people that say, ‘Get off the sidewalk!!!’”

  • Jeremy Rc Tuttle

To which Jason Allen Burkey added:

It’s unsafe to use sidewalks as a bike rider.  You can tell those who have never been on a road bike or a mountain bike!"

Julian J Broggio wrote:

“I can’t believe how many people are angry about this."

Shaun Jordan asked:

“How is this so complicated? Just like when a slower vehicle is in front of you, wait until there is no oncoming traffic and pass them.”

Another TV-7 watcher commented:

Everybody that is up in arms about 3-feet.  Honestly?"

  • Millie BattagliaKomisarz

Nate Greenhoe said:

“Safer laws, mutual respect, more bike lanes, and bike paths are the answer!”

And there was this Dr. Seuss-like final comment:

“Until they make major changes to texting and driving we are all at high risk, in a car, on bike, or on foot. I will not eat green eggs and ham, I will not eat them Sam I am.”

  • Joseph Whelan

Bottom line, remember, it’s now a Michigan law!
