WXYZ Editorial: 70 Years of 7 - Looking back and forward for the Detroit area

Posted

1948.  The cost of a gallon of  gas was 16 cents.  The Cleveland Indians defeated the Boston Braves in the World Series.  Harry Truman won an upset presidential victory over Thomas Dewey.  Televisions began appearing in more and more homes.  And WXYZ Channel 7 signed on the air from the studios of the old Maccabees Building in Detroit!

Tuesday, October 9th, will mark the 70th anniversary of one of America’s most iconic broadcast stations.   It’s a historic milestone that we’ll celebrate on-air and on all our media platforms.  We’ll look back on the memories, the pride, the special places, and the unforgettable moments that united us and defined our city.

For seven decades we have been Standing Up and telling the world about Detroit, our wonderful home.  But our 70th anniversary project will be much more than a nostalgic look back through our television lens.  We’ll be looking ahead to the next 70 years of delivering relevant content on multiple media platforms.  We’ll showcase the technology of the future that will help keep us engaged with this community and our unwavering commitment to fair and balanced journalism and telling the stories that strengthen our neighborhoods.

On Tuesday evening at 7:30, we invite you to watch our half-hour broadcast, 70 Years of 7.  It will explore the impact this station has had on Southeast Michigan and the emotional bond we have had created with the people that live here.

It’s been an honor to serve you and we thank you for making us your go-to source for news and information for the past 70 years!   Together, we’re excited about the next 70 years and beyond!

I’m Mike Murri, Vice President & General Manager
