WXYZ DETROIT — If you want to impact the lives of children, just give them some books. It’s one of the best ways to open up their imagination and let them explore the possibilities of what they can become. The fruits of this community’s generosity is on full display in our newscasts and online as we begin distributing more than 10-thousand books to very deserving schools and children.

You may recall that last summer, Channel 7 & TV-20 put out a call for donations to support our “Give A Child A Book” campaign. Our employees and thousands of people in this region made donations along with matching contributions from the Scripps Howard Foundation. We have also been aided by a wonderful partnership with United Way for Southeastern Michigan and the Scholastic Publishing Company. It has been a determined team effort!

Together, we understand that putting new, age-appropriate books in the hands of children is an invaluable experience. Consider that 42-percent of American children come from families without disposable income to purchase new books. One-in-six children who are not reading proficiently in third grade do not graduate from high school on time. These are alarming statistics but surrounding kids with books now can change the numbers long-term. Reading helps children build vocabulary, increase awareness and comprehension, and greatly expands their horizons.
