WXYZ DETROIT — Back to school time is here and the focus on education has never been greater! All children throughout metro Detroit will be learning in some fashion, either virtually or in the classroom. Channel 7 and TV20 Detroit, would like to wish our students, parents, teachers, and faculty a safe, productive, and healthy school year.

However your child is being taught, the number of books in their home can be a direct indicator of how successful they’ll be in school. Research shows the achievement gap for kids can be narrowed by their access to books. Unfortunately, many families with young students do not have books in their home. At Channel 7 and TV20 Detroit, we want to change that and you can help! Our “If You Give a Child a Book” campaign has helped put thousands of new, age-appropriate books into the hands of kids throughout Metro Detroit. And this year, we're doing it again because we know the impact it can have.

You watched this week as over 1400 families in our communities got to take home two new books a piece. That was because our employees here and viewers like you opened their hearts and their wallets. And there's still time to help. You can donate now by texting "WXYZ" to 345-345 or go to WXYZ dot com, slash, Give-a-book. Your entire donation will go toward providing new, age-appropriate, diverse books for kids in our communities that need it most.

As a school year like no other begins, together we can make a difference. With the help of “If You Give a Child a Book” from Channel 7 , TV20 Detroit, and the Scripps Howard Foundation, many children will have a chance to be successful!
