Editorial – Census 2020 & Michigan

It is crunch the numbers time for the 2020 Census! The U.S. Constitution requires that every 10 years, every man, woman and child living in America be counted. This is especially important and challenging in the current environment for Michigan and Metro Detroit.

By now, everyone should have received their personal mailing from the Census Bureau. It’s a quick and easy questionnaire that only takes 10 minutes to complete. You can do so online, by mail or on the phone in multiple non-English languages, including American Sign Language. There are also numerous trusted community organizations willing to help you. For more information, go to our website at WXYZ.com.

The Census can truly reflect our state and its needs. It determines billions of dollars in funding for our roads, schools, hospitals and local support programs. It will also control the number of seats Michigan has in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Everyone counted represents our fair share of federal tax dollars. Any money left on the table will go to neighboring states. If the recent crisis has taught us anything, it is that federal funding requests for help to Michigan are based on our census numbers.

Ten years ago, Detroit had the worst big city census form return rate in the nation. We must not repeat that history!

By law, the U.S. Census is safe and secure. It cannot be used against you by any governmental agency.

Help spread the word and shape the future of Southeast Michigan and our Great Lakes State. It’s not too late to be STAND UP and be counted. Your response matters!
