WXYZ Editorial: Springtime development, a healthy sign for PAL Corner Ballpark & MI. Central Station

Springtime is a sign of growth and renewal.  From budding flowers to the Detroit Tigers' Opening Day, they are symbols of rebirth and something new.  So is the Police Athletic League's new Corner Ballpark. Couple that with the possible sale and renovation of the old Michigan Central Station, and that's two positive redevelopment steps for this spring.  We applaud the vision and collaborative efforts of business and community leaders!

Until recently, the historic lot at Michigan & Trumbull sat vacant for nearly 20 years.  But after 5 years of planning and raising $21 million dollars, hundreds of Detroit PAL kids will now have a world-class facility for youth sports.  This is fantastic use of the Old Tiger Stadium site!

About a block away from the new ballpark, sits Detroit's best known urban decay eyesore.  For 30 years, photos have been taken of what this once beautiful Michigan Central Train Depot has become.  It's a ruin of itself owned by Detroit billionaire Matty Moroun.  Reports and speculation that the Moroun family may be in negotiations to sale the building to Ford is potentially great news!  A real estate transfer of this type could do wonders to help Detroit's urban revitalization efforts and Ford's mobility plans.

With the economy now healthy and the city's bankruptcy well behind us, Detroit has a window of opportunity to make the most its historic buildings and neighborhoods.  PAL's Corner Ballpark and Moroun's Michigan Central Depot could be a world-class attraction for Corktown and Detroit.
