It's been 70 years since the first Buddy's Pizza location opened. They are celebrating that milestone with a new style of pizza that's has a local flavor.
Buddy's Pizza is proud to be serving its famous Detroit-style square pizza for seven decades and they're honoring the anniversary with a special pie with a local taste.
Dennis Kot is the general manager of the original location.
"Me being Polish, and a few other employees are Polish, we thought to come up with something that will honor the area," he said.
That's how the Hamtramck Special was created!
The original location is on Six Mile on the border of Detroit and Hamtramck.
Because of the rich Polish culture, Dennis decided to make something that represents a Polish flavor.
"It's like a sandwich, a kielbasa sandwich with sauerkraut on it with Buddy's pizza crust being the bread."
Not only is the pizza inspired by dishes you would find at local Polish restaurants, but the ingredients are local as well, like the sauerkraut - kielbasa and the mustard.
"Srodek's meat market in Hamtramck for their smoked kielbasa," he said. "The Brinery out of Ann Arbor using their sauerkraut and Red Pelican for the mustard to put on the pizza."
The pizza will only be available at the original Buddy's Pizza location.
Dennis added, "This is a fun and unique pizza that tastes very great!"
